photo of John Dwyer On January 11, 2000, John Dwyer was named the Coordinator of International Information Programs (IIP) at the Department of State. IIP has bureau status and the Coordinator position is the administrative equivalent to Assistant Secretary.

Mr. Dwyer has been a Foreign Service Officer since 1978. He was Deputy Associate Director for Information at the United States Information Agency from August 1998 until October 1999, when USIA was consolidated into the Department of State. From 1996 to 1998, Mr. Dwyer served as Minister-Counselor for Public Affairs at the United States Embassy in Brasilia, Brazil.

His previous assignments include Bolivia, Venezuela, Mexico, and Brazil. From 1993 to 1994, he directed the Press and Publications Division at USIA, and from 1994 to 1996 he was Deputy Director in its Office of American Republics.

His professional recognitions include: the 2000 Edward R. Murrow Award for Excellence in Public Diplomacy granted jointly with the Fletcher School, Tufts University, and the Department of State; the Department of State Superior Honor Award in 1998; the 1996 USIA Equal Employment Opportunity Award; and four USIA's Meritorious Honor Awards.

Previous to the Foreign Service, Mr. Dwyer was Assistant Professor and Director of Undergraduate Studies for Spanish at Yale University, and an instructor of Intercultural Studies at Simon's Rock College, now part of Bard College. From 1985 to 1987, he was the Managing Director for Latin American Affairs at the Americas Society/Council of the Americas in New York City.

Mr. Dwyer received his B.A. from the University of Connecticut, and an M.A., M.Phil. and Ph.D. from Yale University. He is married and has two children.
