John E. Lange
BiographyJohn E. Lange of Milwaukee, Wisconsin is a career member of the Senior Foreign Service. Most recently, he was the deputy chief of mission at the American Embassy in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. He served as charge d'affaires, ad interim, from early January to early September l998, and led the mission following the tragic terrorist bombing of the embassy on August 7, 1998.
Earlier, Ambassador Lange served as deputy in the Office of East African Affairs at the Department of State and as counselor for Refugee and Migration Affairs at the U.S. Mission to International Organizations in Geneva, Switzerland. He also has been stationed in West Africa (Lome, Togo) and at U.S. embassies in Paris and Mexico City. Prior to joining the diplomatic service in l98l, he spent 5 years at the United Nations Association of the U.S.A. in New York.
Ambassador Lange received a juris doctor degree (cum laude) from the University of Wisconsin Law School in l975. In l996, he was a distinguished graduate of the National War College and received a Master of Science Degree in National Security Strategy.
He speaks French and Spanish.
