Charles Manatt
Ambassador to Dominican Republic

Charles T. Manatt was sworn in as U.S. Ambassador to the Dominican Republic by Under Secretary of State Thomas Pickering on December 9, 1999. He presented his credentials to the Dominican president Leonel Fernandez in Santo Domingo on December 17, 1999.

Amb. Manatt was Chairman of the law firm Manatt, Phelps and Phillips, LLP, which he co-founded in Los Angeles, California in 1965, prior to his appointment to his diplomatic post. He also co-founded the First Los Angeles Bank and served as its chairman from 1973 through 1989. Amb. Manatt served as Chairman of the Democratic National Committee, the Democratic Party of the United States, from 1981 to 1985. Long active in the democracy movement, Amb. Manatt was the founding Chairman of the National Democratic Institute for International Affairs. He also served as Vice Chairman of the National Endowment for Democracy, Chairman of the International Foundation for Election Systems (IFES), and served on the board of directors of the Center for International Private Enterprise and the Center for Democracy. He has been actively involved in numerous community and institution-building activities. He is a trustee of the Mayo Clinic Foundation, the Greater Washington, D.C. Board of Trade, the Hugh O-Brien Youth Foundations, and was formerly a trustee of the National Symphony Orchestra at the John F. Kennedy for the Performing Arts. Amb. Manatt continues his service as Vice Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the George Washington University and is also on the Board of Governors of the Iowa State University Foundation.

Amb. Manatt received a Bachelor of Science degree from Iowa State University in 1958 and a J.D. degree from the George Washington University School of Law in 1962. He served as an officer in the U.S. Army and Army Reserves in the Quartermaster Corps and the Judge Advocate Generals Corps.
