1. Country Profile

Population: 3.7 million (Jan 1999)

Population growth rate in 1998: -1 percent

Religions: the Roman Catholic religion is dominant. Twenty other religious communities conduct their activities in Lithuania: Evangelic (Lutherans and Reformers), Orthodox believers, Old Believers, Jewish, Buddhists and others.

Government system: Parliamentary Democracy. Lithuania re-adopted its 1922 Constitution in October 1991. According to the Lithuanian Constitution the Seimas (Parliament) approves all Lithuanian laws and is responsible for making strategic decisions on political and economic development of the Republic.

Languages: Lithuanian is the official language; most Lithuanian citizens also speak Russian. English is the most popular Western language. German is also spoken.

Workweek: 40 hours.
