Document Declassification Review
During the first two months of Fiscal Year 1997 (OctoberNovember) the Department of State completed declassification review of over three and a quarter million pages of its official records. Approximately two and a quarter million pages represent Lot Files of senior officials and units of the State Department for the 1950's and 1960's. The OctoberNovember figure also includes 700,000 pages of previously accessioned 195054 and 196769 Central Files reviewed by the State team at the National Archives (NARA). During this same period State Department records managers offered to NARA for accessioning nearly two million pages and 29 audio tapes.
In Fiscal Year 1996, the State Department conducted declassification review of nine and a quarter million pages of its official records. Of this amount 8,935,971 pages were declassified. Among these were all Central Files through mid1973. Small portions of these same files also were offered to NARA without declassification review.
