Press Statement by James P. Rubin, Spokesman
November 24, 1998
The United States welcomes Emile Lahoud's assumption of the office of president of Lebanon. We look forward to working with him on the many important issues of mutual interest to our two countries. We are pleased that Congressman Lahood and Congressman Rahall were present at the inauguration.
President Lahoud has devoted his life to public service on behalf of Lebanon. The leadership, energy, and determination he displayed in rebuilding the Lebanese Armed Forces will serve him well as president.
While Lebanon has made genuine progress in recent years, much remains to be done to strengthen state institutions and to further the process of national reconciliation and reconstruction.
The United States extends its best wishes to President Lahoud, the government of Lebanon, and the Lebanese people as they work together to achieve these goals.
