Press Statement by James P. Rubin, Spokesman
January 7, 1999
Democratic Republic of The Congo The Department of State is aware of press reports that Congolese rebels may have killed hundreds of civilians in eastern Congo between December 30 and January 1. We cannot confirm these reports at this time. However, we are seeking further information through our Embassies in the region.
We have raised with the rebel leadership our concerns about the reported massacre and the need to investigate these allegations. We also urge the rebels to allow access to the site by independent investigators.
We condemn all human rights violations, regardless of who commits them. We reiterate our calls on all parties to the Congo conflict to ensure the safety and protection of the human rights and lives of all non-combatants, regardless of ethnicity.
