Press Statement by James P. Rubin, Spokesman
February 3, 1999
Guinea-Bissau - Renewed Fighting The United States deplores the renewed fighting in Guinea-Bissau and urges all sides to observe the peace agreement that was signed in Abuja on November 1. We call on all combatants to immediately cease fire so that ECOWAS can resume deployment of its interposition force. We also strongly urge both sides in this conflict to build on what they have accomplished thus far, and in particular, to work together to ensure that a Government of National Unity is sworn in as soon as possible.
