Press Statement by James P. Rubin, Spokesman
March 27, 1999
Paraguay: Deaths of Demonstrators The United States deplores the deaths of demonstrators in front of the Paraguayan Congress on the evening of March 26, and calls on the Government of Paraguay to conduct a thorough investigation leading to the prosecution of those responsible. We extend our deepest sympathies to the families of the four young people who were killed, and to the civilians and police who were injured.
The United Sates strongly condemns the use of violence by any side as a tool for resolving political differences, and calls on all sides to remain calm and to seek solutions to political differences through peaceful and constitutional means.
