United States Deeply Regrets the Death of
Jozo Leutar, Deputy Minister of Interior of
The Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina

The United States deeply regrets the death of Jozo Leutar, Deputy Minister of Interior of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina March 28. We extend our deepest condolences to Minister Leutar's family and colleagues at this time of loss.

The United States condemns the senseless, cowardly act of violence that took Minister Leutar's life. We will continue to work with Federation police and with others in the international community to ensure that those responsible are brought to justice. The United States is also committed to working with all parties to address the overall problem of crime in Bosnia and Herzegovina, including redoubling efforts to identify and prosecute those responsible for acts of violence directed against Croats in Middle Bosnia Canton.

Minister Leutar's commitment to building and professionalizing police in the Federation was an example to us all. His efforts set a high standard for all officials in the Federation and throughout Bosnia and Herzegovina for upholding the letter and spirit of the Dayton Accords. We fully expect Minister Leutar's successor will continue this vital work. His efforts to protect the rights of all citizens of the Federation will be his legacy.
