U.S.-Japan Joint Efforts on Global Issues,
Such as Climate Change and Disease Control,
Under the Common Agenda

Senior U.S. and Japanese officials will meet at the State Department on Thursday April 8 to review developments and announce new projects done under the U.S.-Japan Common Agenda.

The Common Agenda covers bilateral cooperation on global issues, including climate change, disease prevention, science and technology research, and natural disaster mitigation. The U.S. and Japan have collaborated on some 200 projects on nearly every continent under the Common Agenda, which was inaugurated by President Clinton and then-Prime Minister Miyazawa in 1993.

Frank Loy, Under Secretary of State for Global Affairs, will chair the U.S. delegation, which will include senior officials from some 15 USG agencies including the Agency for International Development, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, and the National Science Foundation. Deputy Foreign Minister for Economic Affairs Koichi Haraguchi will lead the Japanese delegation with senior officials from eight Japanese agencies.

There will be a camera spray at the opening of the meeting at the Loy Henderson Conference Room on Thursday April 8, at 8:25 a.m. Senior U.S. and Japanese officials will hold an on-the-record briefing on the Common Agenda at 12:15 p.m., April 8 in the Zenger Room of the National Press Club, and will provide details on new and ongoing projects.
