Press Statement by James B. Foley, Deputy Spokesman
April 12, 1999
Coup d’Etat in Niger We deeply regret the loss of life occasioned by the violent assassination of Nigerian President Ibrahim Mainasara Bare and strongly condemn the resort to violence to resolve political conflicts in Niger. We call on the Council of National Reconciliation to restore constitutional rule and move quickly to effect a peaceful transition to a democratically elected, civilian Government to Niger. We urge all elements of Nigerian society to continue to work together to maintain calm and to strive for genuine peace and national reconciliation.
