Press Statement by James P. Rubin, Spokesman
April 17, 1999
Attack In East Timor The United States is deeply disturbed by reports that armed militias favoring continued integration with Indonesia attacked civilians in Dili, the capital of East Timor, causing the deaths of at least 8 people and perhaps more. We urgently call on the Indonesian security forces in the strongest possible terms to bring the pro-integration militia groups under control and fulfill their responsibilities to protect all persons in East Timor. Moreover, we look to the Indonesian authorities to bring the perpetrators of these violent attacks to justice.
