Robert A. Seiple Sworn in as Ambassador at Large for
International Religious Freedom

Today, Robert A. Seiple of Seattle, Washington was sworn in as Ambassador at Large for International Religious Freedom. In this position, Ambassador Seiple will serve as the principal adviser to the President and the Secretary of State on the promotion and protection of international religious freedom.

In October 1998, President Clinton announced Ambassador Seiple's appointment when he signed the International Religious Freedom Act, which is designed to enhance the United States Government's efforts to combat religious intolerance and persecution around the world. Among its measures was the creation of Ambassador Seiple's post. The Senate confirmed Ambassador Seiple in March.

The Clinton Administration is committed to advancing religious freedom in every region and for every faith. We have worked closely with Congress - as well as with human rights and religious groups - to secure this goal. On religious freedom issues, the United States speaks with one voice.

Prior to his nomination by President Clinton, Ambassador Seiple served as the Special Representative of the Secretary of State for International Religious Freedom. Ambassador Seiple previously served his country as a Marine Corps aviator. Prior to joining the Administration, he headed World Vision, one of the world's largest humanitarian non-governmental organizations.
