Joint Press Conference: Under Secretary Eizenstat and
German Minister of the Chancellery Bodo Hombach

Under Secretary of State for Economic, Business and Agricultural Affairs Stuart Eizenstat and German Minister of the Chancellery Bodo Hombach will hold an on the record, on camera, joint press conference on Wednesday, May 12, l999, at 4:00 p.m. in the Department of State Press Briefing Room (2118).

On May 11-12, there will be working meetings at the Department of State to establish a process for achieving legal closure and making payments in connection with slave labor, forced labor, and other outstanding claims that arose under the Nazi regime during World War II. The meetings will be co-chaired by the United States and Germany. Participants will include government officials from Poland, the Czech Republic, Belarus, Ukraine, Russia and Israel; representatives from German industry and their attorneys; attorneys for the plaintiffs; and representatives of the World Jewish Congress and other Jewish organizations.

Members of the press wishing to attend the joint press conference must have media ID (US Department of State, White House, Capitol Hill or USIA’s Foreign Press Center) or a letter on official letterhead from their news organization verifying their employment as a journalist, accompanied by a photo ID (driver’s license or passport).
