Peace Agreement for Congo

The U.S. welcomes the announced cease-fire agreement adopted today by the regional Ministers of Foreign Affairs and Defense in Lusaka, Zambia aimed at ending the conflict in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. We congratulate President Chiluba and the Government of Zambia for their central role in hosting the talks and leading the mediation effort over the past several months. We also congratulate all the participants for their successful work. We look forward to reviewing carefully the text of the agreement to see how we can most effectively and constructively support implementation of this accord.

The U.S. encourages the parties to the conflict to sign the final agreement as quickly as possible, to implement and adhere to the proposed cease-fire, and to act in good faith to enable the citizens of the Democratic Republic of the Congo and neighboring states to pursue their lives in peace, prosperity and democracy.
