Press Statement by James P. Rubin, Spokesman
As Ecuador enters the 10th day of strikes in the transportation sector, affecting access to food and other basic necessities in many of Ecuador's cities, the U.S. is particularly concerned that certain Ecuadorian political figures are acting irresponsibly by inflaming this already serious situation. Unfortunately, some are even advocating the use of violence or unconstitutional means to pressure or attempt to remove the democratically elected government of Ecuador. The U.S. and the international community will be watching closely the actions of Ecuador's leaders in the current crisis. The U.S. calls on all political sectors in Ecuador to come together and work responsibly, within democratic norms, to solve the country's economic problems. [end of document]
