Secretary's Trip to Central Asia
Secretary of State Madeleine K. Albright will travel to Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan April 14-20, her first visit to Central Asia as Secretary of State.
Secretary Albright will consult with officials of the three governments on a broad range of bilateral and multilateral issues, discussing efforts to establish strong democratic and market-oriented institutions, as well as regional security concerns. She will also meet with American business representatives as well as local NGO and other leaders active in strengthening the protection of human rights and building a civil society in these countries.
In Kazakhstan Secretary Albright will visit the new capital of Astana, as well as the commercial center, Almaty. She will continue to Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan. In Uzbekistan she will begin her visit in Tashkent and conclude with stops in two of the oldest cultural centers in Central Asia, Samarkand and Bukhara.
