U.S. Department of State
Statement by Philip T. Reeker, Deputy Spokesman
New Consular Information Sheet For Russia
Today the Department of State is reissuing the Consular Information Sheet for Russia.
The Department remains extremely concerned by the circumstances surrounding the arrest and continued detention of U.S. citizen Edmond Pope. The arrest of an American citizen involved in legitimate commerce and held for an extended period under unacceptable circumstances raises questions about the risks to Americans seeking to engage in any commercial activity with Russian military-industrial enterprises and our ability to protect their welfare. As a result, we have revised the section on Safety and Security to highlight the particular dangers posed to Americans seeking to engage in such business.
This is not the first instance of a U.S. citizen arrested or detained for what would be generally regarded as normal business activity. During the last several years, there have been a number of such incidents involving the arrest and/or detention of U.S. citizens. Americans are well-advised to take this information into consideration before planning business-related travel to Russia.
