Statement by Philip T. Reeker, Deputy Spokesman
Democratic Republic of the Congo Death of Archbishop Kataliko
The United States expresses condolences to the family of Archbishop Kataliko and to the people of Bukavu following the Archbishop's death on October 3 in Italy. Emmanuel Kataliko, the Roman Catholic Archbishop of Bukavu in eastern Congo, had been exiled to Butembo and prevented from returning to his diocese by the Rally for Congolese Democracy which controls Bukavu and other parts of eastern Congo. This action served to exacerbate tensions in opposition-controlled areas, particularly in South Kivu. The United States had welcomed his recent return to his diocese and had hoped that he could play a constructive role in reducing tensions in the region.
We call upon all parties in the region to act in a spirit of reconciliation.
