Zimbabwe: U.S. Calls on Zimbabweans to Renounce Rhetoric of Violence

The United States is deeply concerned about reports that the leader of Zimbabwe's opposition Movement for Democratic Change raised the possible use of violence to remove President Mugabe from office at a recent political rally. Although the Movement for Democratic Change subsequently released a statement underscoring its commitment to peaceful change, even a rhetorical threat of violence has no place in a democracy.

The United States calls on all Zimbabwean political leaders - Government and opposition alike - to refrain from the use or threat of violence in both rhetoric and action. The United States urges the Government of Zimbabwe to observe the rule of law, respect the fundamental principles of multiparty democracy, and the political and human rights of all Zimbabweans.
