Azerbaijan: Disqualification of Opposition Parties

The United States welcomes the October 6 request by the President of Azerbaijan that the Azerbaijani Central Election Commission (CEC) allow the registration of all political parties to submit proportional lists in the country's November parliamentary elections. Subsequent action on October 8 by the CEC has made it possible for these parties, including the previously excluded opposition Musavat and the Azerbaijan Democratic Parties, to conduct nation-wide electoral campaigns.

We look forward to additional steps consistent with OSCE's Office of Democratic Institutions and Human Rights recommendations. Nevertheless, the October 8 decision by the Central Election Commission represents an important and welcome step toward the creation of a climate in which international standards for the conduct of the November 5 parliamentary elections can be met.
