Notice to the Press January 13, 2001 Briefing on Austrian Property Restitution Talks Talks on Nazi-era property restitution with Austria resume for a two-day session January 16-17, at the State Department. They are being facilitated by Treasury Deputy Secretary Stuart Eizenstat, the President and Secretary of State's Special Representative for Holocaust Issues. The Austrian delegation is led by Ambassador Ernst Sucharipa, Special Envoy for Property Issues, and Ambassador Hans Winkler, Chief of the Legal Department, Austrian Foreign Ministry, and includes government and business representatives. The victims' side is composed of plaintiffs' attorneys and representatives of Jewish groups, including the Conference on Jewish Material Claims and the Austrian Jewish Community. These property talks were launched in Vienna on October 24. The participants are seeking to reach final agreement on the establishment of a fund to compensate Holocaust survivors and heirs of those who did not survive for property losses. Mr. Eizenstat will hold a briefing for the media at the conclusion of the current round of talks on Wednesday, January 17, at 3:30 p.m. The briefing will take place in the State Department's Loy Henderson conference room on the first floor.
