Tajikistan: Assassination Attempt Against President
The State Department condemns a terrorist attack on Tajikistan's President Rahmonov and other government officials that took place in the northern city of Khojend, Tajikistan, April 30. At approximately 11 A.M. Tajikistan local time, a hand grenade was thrown at President Rahmonov's car as he was on his way to a public presentation. We were pleased that the President was apparently not seriously injured in the attack, but express our condolences to the families of the victims and to those injured.
This attack was condemned by opposition leaders. This incident should have no detrimental effect on the peace process. The inter-Tajik negotiations have come a long way, and now stand on the threshold of successful national reconciliation. It is important that both sides maintain their commitment to the process and not allow diversions to deflect them from the path to peace that they have embarked upon.
