Biography

Alan Lang, Open Forum ChairmanAlan Lang assumed the Office of Chairperson of the Secretary's Open Forum in September 2000. The Chairperson is elected annually by employees of the U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Agency for International Development. In this capacity, Mr. Lang coordinates the Open Forum Speakers' Program and monitors the Dissent Channel, a vehicle for expressing dissenting views on matters of central importance to U.S. diplomacy.

His recent assignments include a one-year detail to the Public Employees Roundtable as Assistant Executive Director and Director of Public Affairs (1999-2000); Foreign Affairs Officer/Senior Policy Adviser, Office of Resources Plans and Policy in the Office of the Secretary of State (1997-1999); and Open Forum Chairperson (1995-1997).

Prior to joining the Department, Mr. Lang earned two graduate degrees from the University of Pittsburgh. He holds a Master of Library Science degree from the School of Library and Information Science (1990) and a Master of Urban and Regional Planning degree from the Graduate School of Public and International Affairs (1992).

Mr. Lang's avocations include working with students at a local elementary school as a tutor and mentor, hiking, competing in marathons, writing short stories, and horseback riding.
