"Science at the State Department," Address by Under Secretary Frank E. Loy before the American Association for the Advancement of Science, Washington, DC, April 15, 1999

Overview of Science and Technology Activities

The State Department encourages and facilitates a broad range of international science and technology (S&T) activities. International S&T cooperation strengthens America's relations with key friends and allies, promotes regional cooperation, and serves as an important building block in developing new relationships and alliances. Science and technology also plays an increasingly important role in our global efforts and initiatives to reduce the spread of emerging and infectious diseases, mitigate the effects of climate change, protect the world's forests, minimize marine pollution, and conserve the world's fisheries.

Some examples of the State Department's role in the international S&T arena include:

Bilateral Science and Technology Framework Agreements

U.S.-EU Agreement on Scientific and Technological Cooperation
