KDOM Daily Report
Released by the Bureau of European and Canadian Affairs, Office of South Central European Affairs, U.S. Department of State, Washington, DC, January 1, 1999 |
Compiled by EUR/SCE (202-647-4850) from daily reports
of the U.S. element of the Kosovo Diplomatic Observer MissionJanuary 1, 1999
Kosovo remained calm today with no cease-fire infractions reported. KDOM escorted a U.S. Senate staff delegation on visits to Pec, Krivoc, Kijevo, and Malisevo where the delegation members met with KLA, police, and others.
KDOM met with Serbian village leaders from Babin Most, Priluzje, and Plemetina (NW of Obilic) to discuss security for Serbian Christmas celebrations on January 7. The Serbs are concerned especially about entering the KLA territory where some 200 people will participate in cutting of oak branches (a Serbian religious tradition). KDOM will meet with OSCE/KVM on January 4 to coordinate and provide a presence in the area for the occasion
Albanian villagers in Petrovo (south of Stimlje) told KDOM that a 37-year-old male resident of Vojnoc (north of Urosevac) was shot and killed by police as he returned to his village with food on December 30. The ICRC has examined the body. Also, on December 29 in Urosevac, an ethnic Albanian from the village of Jezerce was taken from a taxi and arrested by police. Residents of Jezerce claim that police have targeted residents of their village for harassment and arbitrary arrest on charges of being KLA members.
Police report today that there was a small-arms attack against one of their patrols in the village of Lapusnik in the Glogovac municipality.
KDOM operated 13 missions today with 45 U.S. personnel and 16 armored vehicles.
