U.S. Department of State
Statement: Secretary Christopher on Death of Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin
Statement on November 4, 1995, Washington DC. Released by the Office of the Spokesman.
I am deeply shocked and saddened by the tragic news of the assassination of Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin. History will record Prime Minister Rabin as one of the towering figures of this century. He dedicated his life to Israel, its security, and the cause of peace. Heroic in war and in the service of his country, he pursued peace with the same courage and determination.
The world has lost a leader and a statesman. Israel has lost one of its finest sons and we have lost a strong and true friend of the United States.
We will rededicate ourselves to the very causes that inspired this great leader: the security of Israel; the unshakeable bonds of friendship between the United States and Israel; and the promotion of Middle East peace.
I would like to extend my deepest condolences to his wife Leah and the people of Israel.
