Luis J. Lauredo
Ambassador to the OAS and National Summit Coordinator

Ambassador Luis J. Lauredo was appointed by President William J. Clinton on November 10, 1999, as the U.S. Permanent Representative to the Organization of American States and the U.S. Coordinator for the third Summit of the Americas.

At the OAS, Ambassador Lauredo works with other hemispheric leaders to strengthen democracy, advance human rights, foster economic integration and promote peace and security throughout the Western Hemisphere.

As the U.S. Government's Summit of the Americas Coordinator, Ambassador Lauredo develops U.S. policy positions for the Summit and represents the U.S. in the three-country troika, which is spearheading preparations for the 2001 Summit in Quebec City, Canada.

Prior to his appointment, Ambassador Lauredo had an extensive career in the private sector.

• At the time of his appointment, he was the President of Greenberg Traurig Consulting Inc., an affiliate of the international law firm Greenberg Traurig, where he specialized in international relations, energy, telecommunications, aviation, and banking issues.
• Ambassador Lauredo previously served as Executive Director of the 1994 Summit of the Americas in Miami.
• Ambassador Lauredo has also served as Senior Vice President of the Export-Import Bank of the United States, Commissioner of the Florida Public Service Commission, City Councilman for the Village of Key Biscayne, Florida, and as the President's Representative to the Southern Governor's Energy Board. He was honored by Hispanic Business magazine as one the nation's top "100 Influential Hispanics."

Ambassador Lauredo received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Columbia University. He also attended University of Madrid in Spain and Georgetown University Law Center.
