Washington, D.C., August 8, 1998
As released by the Office of the Spokesman
U.S. Department of State

Blue Bar

I am deeply saddened to confirm the deaths of 11 Americans as a result of the bomb attack on our Embassy in Nairobi, Kenya on August 7, 1998. All were embassy personnel, or their dependents, who gave their lives in the service of our country.

As we are still in the process of notifying the next of kin, and one American diplomat remains unaccounted for, I am only able to release the following names at this time:

Marine Sgt. Jesse N. Aliganga, Marine Security Guard detachment

Jay Bartley, son of Consul General Julian Bartley

Jean Dalizu, Defense Attache’s Office

Molly Hardy, Administrative Office

Army Sgt. Kenneth Hobson II, Defense Attache’s Office

Prabhi Kavaler, General Services Office

Arlene Kirk, Military Assistance Office

Air Force Senior Master Sgt. Sherry Lynn Olds, Military Assistance Office

Michelle O’Connor, General Services Office

Tom Shah, Political Section

The President and I, as well as all the members of our foreign affairs and defense community feel this loss very deeply. On behalf of the entire nation, I extend our deepest condolences to the families and loved ones of those who lost their lives. To everyone affected: You are in the nation’s thoughts and prayers.

Let me once again assure the American people that the United States will not be intimidated by terrorists and will never forget their victims. We will spare no effort and use all the means at our disposal to track down and punish the perpetrators of these outrageous acts.
