Statement on the Death of King Hassan II of Morocco
Yokota Air Base, Japan, July 24, 1999
As released by the Office of the Spokesman
U.S. Department of State
I am deeply saddened by the death of King Hassan II of Morocco, a great friend of the United States and of peace in the Middle East. The King was devoted to the improvement of the lives of his people and the promotion of regional stability and development. He was a pioneer of the Middle East peace process and an Islamic leader who was an enlightened promoter of religious tolerance and understanding. King Hassan was also a steadfast friend of the United States. His support and wise counsel over almost four decades of the closest relations will long be remembered by the American people. We will stand by Morocco at this time of mourning just a we stood shoulder to shoulder with King Hassan in the defense of freedom and the promotion of peace during his long reign.
Our thoughts and prayers are with King Mohammed, his family, and all Moroccans as we mourn King Hassan's passing while honoring his life.
