Great Seal Secretary of State Madeleine K. Albright
Statement on the Sudan Government Bombing of Lui, Mundri County
Lisbon, Portugal, March 3, 2000
As released by the Office of the Spokesman

SECRETARY ALBRIGHT: I am deeply distressed by the continued bombing of civilian population centers by the Sudanese Government in southern Sudan. On March 1, Government of Sudan airplanes bombed the town of Lui, in Mundri County, Western Equatoria. At least 12 bombs were dropped, including several around a marketplace and near a medical facility managed by Samaritanís Purse, a North Carolina-based relief organization. Two people were killed and three were critically wounded. The medical facility received some damage, and medical equipment was destroyed.

The Government of Sudan also reportedly bombed at least six other targets around Lui on the same day. Once again I urge the Government of Sudan to refrain from all aerial bombardment of civilian targets. I have asked U.S. Special Envoy Harry Johnston to raise these important issues in meetings he will have with the Government of Sudan in the coming days.
