October 13, 2000, Washington, D.C.
As released by the Office of the Spokesman
U.S. Department of State
SECRETARY ALBRIGHT: On behalf of the United States I enthusiastically welcome the Nobel committee's decision to award its peace prize to President Kim Dae Jung of the Republic of Korea. We have strongly supported President Kim's engagement policy, the inter-Korean summit held in June, and the ongoing process of north-south dialogue. It is clear that President Kim's visionary leadership has been instrumental in reducing tension on the peninsula and increasing the prospects of a lasting peace.
President Kim not only has been the driving force behind the remarkable events we have witnessed this year, but for many decades he has championed democratic change, human rights, and the rule of law in the Republic of Korea and the world.
