Focus of Trip:
Secretary of State Madeleine K. Albright will travel to Iceland, France, Germany, and Egypt from September 30 to October 5.
In Iceland on September 30, the Secretary discussed cooperation on NATO, the European Security and Defense Identity (ESDI), international peacekeeping, and the bilateral defense relationship, as well as expanded trade opportunities with Alaska.
On October 1, the Secretary traveled to Bordeaux, France and met with former Prime Minister and Mayor of Bordeaux Alain Juppe and openned the newest American Presence Post in France. In Paris on October 2, she took part in a ministerial meeting with France and the European Commission on foreign policy issues, and held bilateral meetings with French officials.
Secretary Albright traveled to Dresden, Germany, on October 3, to participate in celebrations marking the tenth anniversary of German unification. The five heads of Germany's constitutional branches of government, along with invited foreign heads of state and ministers, were expected to attend the ceremonies.
At the request of President Clinton, Secretary Albright met with Prime Minister Barak and Chairman Arafat on the serious escalation of violence in Israel, the West Bank and Gaza. The meeting took place Wednesday, October 4, in Paris, France.
Secretary Albright traveled October 5 to Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt and met with Egyptian officials on Middle East issues. She returned to Washington October 5.
