Focus of Trip:
Secretary of State Madeleine K. Albright is traveling in Africa from December 6-12, 2000. Cape Town and Pretoria,
South Africa are her first stops and then travels to Port Louis, Mauritius and to Gaborone, Botswana.
This trip serves to underscore the unprecedented engagement of the Clinton Administration on the African continent and demonstrates the commitment to democracy, economic progress and regional cooperation of these three countries. In her meetings with a wide array of government officials, non-governmental organizations and members of the civil society, the Secretary focuses on the real challenges facing the region including the battle against HIV/AIDS.
Following these stops, the Secretary has been invited by President Bouteflika of Algeria to witness the signing of the peace agreement by Ethiopia and Eritrea in Algiers on December 12. The final peace agreement builds on a Cessation of Hostilities Agreement brokered by the United States and the Organization of African Unity last June.
