Secretary of State Madeleine Albright and Kazakhstani President Nursultan Nazarbayev today renewed their commitment to work together to combat global warming.

To that end, the U.S. and Kazakhstani sides issued a Joint Statement on Cooperation in the Prevention of Climate Change. The Joint Statement outlines areas of joint action on issues of both bilateral and international concern including:

  • Kazakhstan’s intention to assume the obligations of an Annex I Party to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC);
  • Development by Kazakhstan of a binding national greenhouse gas emissions target that is both environmentally sound and economically achievable;
  • Improvements to Kazakhstan’s ability to measure emissions and develop projects that reduce emissions;
  • Promotion of commercial activity in clean and energy-efficient technology.
