Remarks prior to departure for Ramstein Air Force Base, Germany
Andrews Air Force Base, August 12, 1998
As released by the Office of the Spokesman
U.S. Department of State
SECRETARY ALBRIGHT: I depart for Germany this morning on a mission of pride and sorrow to visit with Americans and Kenyans injured in the bombings; to meet with family members; and to bring home the bodies of 10 Americans who were killed.
I go with deep respect for the service provided to our country by those who gave their lives on its behalf. I go determined that those responsible for these cowardly crimes will be held accountable. I go secure in the knowledge that America will never be intimidated or back down in the face of terrorists.
Tomorrow, here at Andrews, President Clinton will meet our plane and participate in a ceremony honoring our fallen colleagues. Those coming home tomorrow represent, I believe, the very best of America. They were typical of the extraordinary people who protect our interests and promote our values in American diplomatic outposts around the world. They deserve our gratitude; and their families, our support and prayers.
